are you ready?

Preparing for psychotherapy sessions can be very helpful. When you take time to reflect on your thoughts, emotions, and challenges beforehand, it can reduce anxiety and ready yourself to get the most of each session. It also encourages self-awareness, which deepens the therapeutic process and can lead to more meaningful change. Ultimately, preparation empowers you to take an active role in your therapeutic journey. Here are six tips to help you get ready.

Reflect on Your “Why” for Therapy

A common question mental health professionals ask when they meet a client is what brought them to therapy. Your expressed purpose helps the therapist create a helpful plan for how the therapy sessions will go. Try making a list of symptoms, including bothersome thoughts, emotions, behaviours, past experiences and current stressors.

Tell a Loved One

Talking about going to therapy is completely your choice. Talking to someone can offer several benefits, including, increased support, enhanced understanding, reduced isolation and strengthened relationships. You may also identify an accountability partner who walks alongside you in a reciprocal relationship of mutual support and encouragement.

Be Honest

You may feel uncomfortable about “getting real” or you may worry you will say the “wrong” thing. I will meet you where you are at and create a supportive, nonjudgemental space to support trust building. Honesty is essential to effective intervention, self-awareness, addressing core issues, personal growth and promoting authenticity.

Understand You May Get Emotional

It’s natural and normal to experience a range of emotions during therapy. These feelings are a vital part of the healing process and a sign that you’re engaging deeply with your personal growth and self-discovery. Please dress comfortably, bring a grounding item, a beverage, or a notepad, to ease your experience.

Clear Some Space on Either Side of Your Session

Anticipating therapy can often create feelings of stress and anxiety. Arrive a few minutes early and take some slow deep breaths to ground yourself in the present moment. Following the session, try to take time for yourself to further process, decompress or write some notes. Practicing self-care is essential.
